The Sleepover...Is Simply...Over

Blogroll Me!

When I was younger and would go out to Jewish singles' functions, my friends and family would later ask me, "So, did you have a good time?"

Oftentimes my answer was "I had a time."

My son was invited to a sleepover for a friend's birthday. Several boys were invited to help celebrate the boy turning 11. The "event" was supposed to be from 7 p.m. till 10 a.m.

Only problem: It wasn't a sleepover. It was simply an "over."

When I went to pick up my son at 10 a.m., with my other two children in the car, with my great plans to spend a free day (PD Day) off school (and I off work), he very happily told me, "We didn't sleep."

"WHAT!?? What kind of sleepover is that?" I asked aloud.

"We watched a movie, we played Game Cube, we watched another movie, we played more video games..."

"Didn't the parents tell you guys to go to sleep?"

"The father told us that if we were quiet, we could stay up."

Well, I guess the boys were quiet enough -- they stayed up.

So I just want you all to know: I now am the mother of 2 children and a zombie.

Your shock tells us that you clearly never went to a "sleep"over as a kid!

Am I THAT transparent?

In my "kid" days, sleepovers weren't popular...but then again, neither was I. I did have a couple sleepovers with only one girlfriend...not a gaggle of them. But true, I was in my teens then, not 10 years old.

Yes, I was the type of kid who needed my sleep, otherwise I'd be a zombie the next day...feel nauseated and just plain gross.

My son was not just a zombie today -- it was in fact very scary to watch his behavior by the late afternoon, when he was awakened from a quick nap. I thought he was awake, but in truth, he was sleep-walking and making bizarre comments and having unnatural reactions -- apparent confusion on his face, yet distress and fear as well. Very scary for all of us who witnessed it.

That's a very cute tale. Be glad they stayed up with permission and parental knoweldge, that they weren't going behind anyone's back or willfully defying rules - even if it did surprise you.

Oy, the days of sleepovers. My kids had plenty of them here...the goal IS to stay up all night (and drive the mommy crazy). We used to have seances when I was a teenager and also play "truth or dare".

Movies and Gamecube, eh? Sounds like the perfect night.

I did the same thing around that age. I'll always remember it because I consumed a dozen donuts over the time period. I'm talking deep-fried, Krispy Kreme-style (Shipley's Donuts was the name of the store - great drive-thru action). Luckily they'd ordered two dozen so some of the other kids got some as well.

I am still a zombie, to this day.

OOOO I remember "truth or dare"! We used to try to have seances, but inevitably someone would start cracking up or make a joke and we'd all lose it. Eldest EK kid wants to have one this summer for his birthday - I don't know whether I am ready for it!!

lol... "sleep" over :p the idea was to stay up the latest playing truth or dare, eating junk food, watching movies and trying not to make too much noise!

as for singles functions... that's a good answer. i'm gonna have to use it.

My daughter also went to an 11-year-old birthday party sleepover this weekend and at least they (allegedly) got around 6 hours of sleep. I have to say I would've been a bit pissed at the parents if I found out the kids didn't sleep at all. There have been so many of these this year and I know the kids love them but OY, the parents have to pay the price for a few days afterwards. I'm starting to dread getting those birthday invitations in the mail. This girl's party had a movie star theme and they had an Oscar ceremony and went on a scavenger hunt in Brentwood in two stretch limos. Hello? 11 years old? But I do like and trust this kid's mother who is a former Disney child superstar that I had a crush on when I was a kid.

Oy, Danny and his celebs! I want to go to Leah's parties...Limos?!!! Hmmmmmm....a Disney superstar....racking my brain...

I'm thinking, too. Danny is a couple years older than me, so we were watching the same Disney movies at the same time. I'm thinking Hayley Mills, but I don't think she has an 11-year-old daughter. Jodie Foster also was a Disney gal, but she doesn't have an 11-year-old. Neither does Julie Andrews.
I'm stumped.
Danny, you cannot tease us, you know. Not fair!!!!

has to be Haley Mills

I would think its ir-responsible of the hosting parents.
But didnt you appreciate to stroll the store with a sleeping zambie in the shopping cart, instead of a nagging one? ;)
I liked the way you called it an "over" . LOL
