Numbers & Pearl Don't Mix

I can add; I can subtract; I can multiply; I can divide; I can figure out percentages. I can decide if a price I see on a tag or label is a good buy.

But that's about it.

Talk numbers to me -- I'm lost.

Talk investment returns -- and I'm befuddled.

Talk measurement conversions -- and I screw up with a recipe.

Is that why I married an accountant? I wonder.

And no, not ALL accountants are boring people, contrary to their reputation!

That's right, we're not! :)

(Though a co-worker and I realized what nerds we were bringing home a pencil, a red pencil, and 3 months' worth of write-ups to practice on over the weekend... :) )

Actually, I've been surprised to see just how normal/chilled out/funny most accountants are. There are 70 people in my group, and there's probably less than ten really boring people.

Marallyn: If they're not boring, and my husband's not boring, and Ezzie's not boring....how the heck did that theory ever arise?

Sarah: Better than "some" being the operative word. I sometimes can't tackle my daughter's grade 4 math problems -- you know, these deductive logic type questions. What does that tell you about me?

Kasamba: I can calculate the sales, but I didn't divulge how long it takes me to figure out the percent off prices, etc. ;)

CM: I almost dropped math in high school (I did drop all science courses, though, after grade 10), but thanks to my father in particular, I didn't. My math teachers recognized and applauded my perseverance to take basic math courses through grade 13 (which we had in those days.

Ezzie: I've met you, I read your blog. You are definitely not boring.

Mia: Numbers in any language are still numbers, and still difficult to contend with!

I tell everyone that I married a CPA because I can't add two and two without a calculator. :)

But the Punster is far from boring.

Speaking of numbers being difficult in any language, one of the odder things that I learned as a French major was that people almost always do math in their heads in their native language, then translate the results into whatever language they're supposed to be speaking. Maybe the brain just has difficulty processing math in a foreign language.
